The Origin of Mu Chapter
Our Story
Alpha Pi Phi Mu Chapter was founded on the idea that self-identifying women at Manhattan College should have more options and opportunities. It is our understanding that self-identifying women help build the foundation for extra-curricular at our school and that they shouldn’t have only a single option when deciding which Greek organization they want to be affiliated with.
This idea came about when four of us were talking about Greek life at Manhattan College around the time of the Fall 2021 rushing period. Some mentioned, half-joking, that it would be fun to start a new Sorority at MC. This idea was met with immediate interest and inspired us to find a chapter to reach out to.
Alpha Pi Phi was chosen because they were a small, newer Greek Organization seeking to expand and build new chapters. Alpha Pi Phi puts a lot of emphasis on diversity, inclusivity and equality. This was something that spoke to us as given the stereotypes of racism and discrimination that Greek life is often associated with. We sent them an email and within two days we heard back.
After this, two more girls joined our group and thus began a nearly six month process of becoming a full fledged Sorority chapter. In this time we have put in hours of our weeks and weekends into the creation of Mu Chapter. After late night lessons with Alpha Pi Phi’s International VP of Expansion and Development, Solange Valverde and multiple fundraisers and philanthropy events, the six of us have built the foundation for Alpha Pi Phi Mu Chapter into something we are extremely proud of and look forward to sharing with Manhattan College.
